Sculpture, painting, and design of the first
known Italian civilization. Etruscan
terracotta coffins (sarcophagi), carved with
reliefs and topped with portraits of the dead
reclining on one elbow, were to influence the
later Romans and early Christians. Pottery,
bronzeware, and mural paintings survive. Most
examples are from excavated tombs; bright
colours and a vigorous style are typical and
show influences of archaic Greece and the
Middle East.
